THE BONES OF CONTENTION: A BOOK TO SINK YOUR TEETH INTO

Russell Ferrell
Historical Dimensions (2011)
ISBN 9780615438146
Reviewed by Joseph Yurt for ReaderViews (11/11)

“Acrocanthosaurus: The Bones of Contention,” by Russell Ferrell, is a story that’s as amazing as the dinosaur bones discovery around which the adventure unfolds. The book is populated by two larger than life heroes along with a cast of sharply drawn characters from the worlds of paleontology, politics, government, corporations, and contract law. Greed, corruption and dishonesty abound. And like all riveting tales, there are twists and turns, and an unexpected surprise: “Acrocanthosaurus: The Bones of Contention” is no tall tale, it’s a true story.
Simply put, Ferrell describes the book as “basically about nature, a dinosaur discovery and excavation, and the struggles of the book’s two heroes in the aftermath of the discovery.” In fact, this book is a meticulously researched, historical account of what the author contends, and his research would seem to support, is “one of the greatest achievements of paleontological history.” Given both the breadth and importance of the historical and scientific aspects of the story, the author has actually created two versions of the book. This is a review of the version which concentrates more on history. The second version focuses more on the paleontological science of the event.

The story is anchored not by the dinosaur, but rather by its two larger than life, colorful heroes Cephis Hall, the Arkansas hillbilly, and Sid Love, a Choctaw Indian. Hall is the central figure of the story. In the context of today’s modern naturalist and environmentalist model, Cephis himself is an anachronism. He is a classic, old-timey nature guide, who entertains school children and adults with the stories, legend and lore, and magic of the natural world. He and Sid are vestiges of a vanishing breed of American naturalist adventurers, dinosaurs like the one they seek imbedded in the earth. Ferrell’s portrait of Cephis Hall is rich and romantic.

This book is a perfect project match for Ferrell. He is thoroughly familiar with the region of the country in which the story unfolds. He’s an historical writer and former school history and science teacher. And, he has a self-acknowledged bias against the banking and legal professions, and big, multinational companies. This attribute provides especially timely and relevant content in view of the state of current affairs in America and throughout the world. However, these same match-up strengths are also the source of flaws in the book’s manuscript. Some readers may feel that Ferrell “the teacher” is giving them more history and science than they need. Others might feel that there are too many insignificant, anecdotal digressions. But despite these instances, Ferrell is above all a consummate storyteller who always manages to get his yarn back on track and keep the story moving forward at an engaging pace.

Russell Ferrell’s writing infuses “Acrocanthosaurus: The Bones of Contention” with a “tall tale” quality that makes the book an interesting and entertaining read. Its quirky personality makes it a good choice for anyone who is an avid reader of modern, historical non-fiction.

Russell Ferrell is a non-fiction historical writer and was working on several books in the historical area when he decided to put them aside and take up the challenge of writing the true story of Cephis Hall and Sid Love and their struggle to save the Acrocanthosaurus. The story of Cephis and Sid was a story that needed to be told.

Mr. Ferrell is an educator and has also worked as a journalist. He currently lives in Red Oak, Texas with his wife, Waynetta and their four dogs and five cats. Before moving to Texas he owned and operated a cattle ranch in southeastern Oklahoma.

Two New Books Take A Look At The Other Side of Oklahoma History

Oklahoma author Marilyn A. Hudson, announces the publication of two new books that explore some of the history that did not make it into the history books!  "These are two fun titles," noted Hudson, " I found some really interesting stories and one thing led to another."

TALES OF HELL'S HALF ACRE, is 100 pgs., softbound, and looks at some true stories from the period when the thriving center of OKC life was an area known as "Hell's Half Acre."  Roughly located in the area of the current Cox Convention Center and the Myriad Gardens it was a wild and wooly place filled with some fascinating characters and activities before and after statehood.

WHEN DEATH RODE THE RAILS is 180 pgs., softbound, and follows the trail of some strange and true deaths along Oklahoma railroads between 1900 and 1920 and asks, "Did a serial killer stalk early Oklahoma?"  Along the way some interesting facts about Oklahoma railroads and some insights into life 'in the good ole' days.'

Both titles will be available on Amazon June 20, 2011.  For other works, or to read about forthcoming titles, visit Whorl Books.

Oklahoma Runestone Featured in Vampire Tales

The Legend of Michelle Sands, 1958 -- Michelle loves Indian Rock because she, and her Grandmother sense a powerful feeling from this place. There is a price for these feelings because they have disturbing, reoccurring dreams about ancient ceremonies performed there in the past.

When Michelle and the friends go to the well known Indian Rock, emotions of lust and jealous erupts. A figh ensues but the fear, anger and lust between the three teenagers awakens the power of the ancient Vampire Glome who was banished to Indian Rock centuries earlier.

Michelle inherits this power and uses it to save herself.

After the incident at Indian Rock she uses Glome's power to change the lives of the people around her, as well as the power structure of Leflore county.
Author Joe Harwell has created a storyline of exciting possibilities. The main theme of this very different twist on the classic Vampire story is power, and how it's used in every level of society. It's also about sports, law enforcement, religion, politics, business, revenge, greed, fast cars, and The Little Dixie Mafia.

The Legend of Michelle Sands is set in the southeastern Oklahoma town of Howe in 1958. We meet the pretty teenager who inherits the power of an ancient Vampire and uses it to change the lives of the people around her and the power structure of Leflore county Oklahoma.

Upside Down Heart moves the story forward through the 1960's. The 1961 Howe tornado and a Presidential visit to the area the same year both play into this story. Michelle and her growing group expand from Howe around the world. They have great financial success, learn some heart breaking lessons, and encounter new enemies who want to take away their power.

Millennium brings Michelle and her followers into an all out battle with their enemies. The world wide fear about the transition to the year 2000 is at the center of this challenge to their success and survival.

Return to Indian Rock brings Michelle and her group of immortals back to Howe, OK after more than 100 years.

THE LIFE OF LEAFORD BEARSKIN, CHIEF OF THE WYANDOTTE NATION

Kwa-hoo-sha-ha-ke (Flying Eagle) - American Indian Warrior Hero, A Glimpse Into the Life of Leaford Bearskin Chief of the Wyandotte Nation is a book whose time has come.

Through the efforts of the author, Fredrea Gregath Cook, this insightful look at the life of this dynamic personality, will be available in time for this year’s annual meeting and pow-wow of the Wyandotte Nation, September 11, 2009.

Deeply committed to preserving and promoting history of the region, Cook chose this biography as her latest project. Her published work spans preserving local records and families, several titles of lineage research, as well as college texts. A long time friend of Bearskin, personal knowledge, research in public and private collections, and a recent series of interviews serve to round out this glimpse into what makes the man.

An authorized look into this head of state’s life begins with his genealogical origins and sweeps forward in time to the present. This book is an eye opening tale for those who don’t know the Chief very well. For those who are counted as friends, it’s great to finally be able to get “the whole story” in one sitting. Though not a definitive work, at a little over 100 pages, it does handily re-cap his first career in the military, his second career in Civil Service, and his Tribal leadership to this point.

In preparing this work, the author uncovered many great things, with the help of many wonderful people, that a special website has been set up to share extra items, and color photographs, not included in this particular title.

It is at www.gregathcompany.com/wyandotte/flyingeagle, there is no charge and it is open to the public.

The book is available through the publisher, a local business, The Gregath Publishing Company. The author will also be at the Wyandotte pow-wow, where she will have copies on hand. Call the author at 918-542-4148 or visit the website for more information.

A partnership with the local public library has established some "Scanning" dates for historic photos related to the topic to be scanned and used in the volume. Volunteers will be able to help with the writing of individual family, church or business histories.
