GETTING STARTED:
Venues are those places and events which allow the author to a) do a book talk, read from their work, or speak about their topic or process, b) community events where the author can rent a table or space to sell their books to the public or the clientele.

Bookstores (some corporate ones have restrictions, so try first local ones). One OKC store often open to working with new authors is Full Circle Books (http://www.fullcirclebooks.com/events.aspx).
Public libraries do programming to inform and entertain the public and bring people to the library to connect with their services. They can have restrictions on selling books but if you can do inexpensive or an occasional free event it can be beneficial by raising awareness of your work and some publicity. If you do a 'freebie' ask for some good local promotion and advertisement of the event but do not depend on the library, get the word out yourself as well. This is especially good for self-help books and children or teen works.
School libraries - Same thing applies but best for limited topics and must be age appropriate.
Clubs, scouting events, churches, expos or conferences (caution sometimes the space is very expensive!)
